A pilot was killed May 12 when a North American F-51D Mustang crashed near the Tallulah/Vicksburg Regional Airport in Mound, Louisiana. The aircraft, registered as N251CS, was operated by Southern Heritage Air LLC, according to reports from AVweb.

Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board officials responded to the scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the accident. The pilot, identified as a Mississippi-based warbird operator, was the sole occupant of the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The F-51D is the postwar designation for the P-51 Mustang, a long-range fighter used extensively during World War II and the Korean War. While highly regarded for its performance, the type has a documented history of operational accidents over several decades, as noted in aviation safety databases.
