Pilot Killed After Cessna 182 Crashes Near Piseco Airport in New York

A 74-year-old pilot was fatally injured July 12 when his 1966 Cessna 182J Skylane, registration N43TB, crashed near Piseco Airport (K09) in the Adirondacks of New York. The aircraft was operating as a Part 91 personal flight from Hudson Valley Regional Airport in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Sequence of Events

Airport security video showed the aircraft on approach to runway 22, where it began to bounce and porpoise. The airplane bounced three times before climbing and banking steeply to the left. A second camera captured the aircraft in a steep left bank before it struck a tree line approximately 200 yards left of the runway centerline. A witness driving on a road parallel to the runway reported hearing a loud noise, then observed the airplane climbing from the runway before banking left and impacting the trees.

The wreckage was found inverted in dense woods and was consumed by a post-crash fire. The pilot, identified by local outlets as Kenneth J. Andreu of Valhalla, N.Y., held a private pilot certificate with single-engine land and sea ratings. He had logged 1,020 total flight hours as of a 2016 medical application and had been approved for BasicMed since 2018. The aircraft was powered by a Continental IO-470 engine and featured a WREN 460 STOL conversion, which included an upgraded main spar, a revised aileron and stabilator system, and an added canard. The NTSB and FAA are continuing their investigation.
