A 76-year-old pilot was killed June 11, 2026, when his Cirrus SR20 (N858SD) crashed into a residential garage shortly after takeoff from Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport near Wheelers Mill, Ohio, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board. Two children inside the home escaped without injury; no one else on the ground was hurt.

Investigation Underway

The 2006 Cirrus SR20 G2 was operating under FAR Part 91 as a personal flight. The aircraft departed Runway 18 and was in its initial climb when it came down approximately 1,500 feet beyond the runway end, striking the garage before coming to rest upright. The NTSB has classified the accident as a loss of control during the takeoff phase and said no pre-accident mechanical failures have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.

Safety Context

The accident is the latest in a series of fatal Cirrus SR20 incidents involving loss of control during critical flight phases. A 2018 SR20 crash in Houston after takeoff in icing conditions prompted an FAA Safety Alert emphasizing the importance of preflight weather briefings. The NTSB will issue a final probable cause determination after completing its full analysis.
