Piper Saratoga Makes Precautionary Landing Near Bacchus Marsh After Fuel Starvation
A Piper PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP, registration VH-LPW, made a precautionary landing approximately nine kilometers south of Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, on May 1, 2026. The aircraft was in cruise flight at 8,000 feet en route from Stawell Airport to Essendon Airport when the pilot reported the engine began running roughly. No injuries were sustained and no substantial damage to the aircraft was reported.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has classified the event as an engine fuel starvation occurrence and opened an investigation under case AO-2026-076. While fuel starvation has been identified as the primary factor behind the power loss, investigators have not yet determined the underlying cause — whether fuel mismanagement, a mechanical fault or another factor.
The PA-32R is a six-seat, retractable-gear single-engine aircraft widely used in private and charter operations across Australia. Fuel-related power loss remains one of the more common risk factors in single-engine general aviation, and the ATSB routinely investigates such events to identify systemic safety lessons for light aircraft operators.
