A growing ecosystem of independent aviation analysts and pilot communities is increasingly identifying the probable causes of aircraft accidents long before the National Transportation Safety Board releases its final reports. By leveraging ADS-B flight tracking, weather data and standard operating procedures, these analysts are converging on conclusions that frequently align with official government findings.
One prominent example is the 2019 runway excursion at Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Tennessee involving a Cessna Citation carrying Dale Earnhardt Jr. Independent analysts — including those from the TakingOff YouTube channel — identified an unstabilized approach and a missed go-around as the primary factors months before the NTSB officially cited the captain's continuation of an unstabilized approach and the crew's failure to execute a go-around as the probable cause. The board also noted that failure to deploy speed brakes and premature use of thrust reversers contributed to the excursion. Similar patterns emerged in other high-profile cases, including the in-flight breakup of aircraft N291AN and the fatal crash involving EAA's Richard McSpadden and former NFL player Russ Francis, where early community analysis correctly anticipated NTSB findings of partial power loss combined with aggressive low-altitude maneuvering.
The trend of crowd-sourced accident investigation is not without complications, however. The NTSB has recently restricted public access to certain docket materials — including some cockpit voice recordings — limiting the data available for independent safety reconstructions. Analysts and aviation safety advocates argue the restrictions could blunt the community's ability to contribute meaningfully to the broader safety conversation, even as demand for timely, data-driven accident analysis continues to grow.
