Fatal Crashes Prompt India to Tighten Charter Aviation Oversight

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has grounded four Learjet aircraft operated by VSR Ventures following a fatal crash that killed five people, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The Learjet 45XR crashed during approach to Baramati Airport on Jan. 28, veering off runway 11 in fog conditions before bursting into flames at approximately 8:46 a.m.

The incident has intensified scrutiny of India's non-scheduled charter sector after two fatal crashes within a month claimed 12 lives. A separate air ambulance crash in Jharkhand added to safety concerns, while a Pawan Hans helicopter ditched safely in the Andaman Islands without casualties. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has recovered flight recorders from the Baramati crash site.

Regulators are now considering stricter oversight protocols for charter operators, who currently face less stringent requirements than scheduled airlines. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared three days of state mourning, while the Prime Minister expressed condolences. New safety protocols are expected to address mounting concerns about charter operator practices.
