The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report confirming a Cessna 421 crash near Wimberley, Texas, killed all five people aboard. The April 30, 2026, accident involved an aircraft flying from Amarillo to New Braunfels, where passengers were reportedly heading for a pickleball tournament.

In-Flight Breakup Confirmed

The preliminary report states the aircraft suffered an in-flight breakup before impact. The debris field stretched approximately 1.25 miles, indicating the plane disintegrated in the air rather than striking the ground intact. Investigators cite the pilot's prior report of a pitot heat failure as a critical factor.

Icing and Airspeed Concerns

Air traffic control communications reveal the pilot later reported the pitot tube iced over and requested a descent to warmer air. Weather modeling suggests temperatures between minus-2 degrees Celsius and minus-6 degrees Celsius along the route, supporting conditions for airframe icing. The NTSB noted that final conclusions regarding the cause remain pending.
