NTSB Probes Fatal Challenger 650 Crash After Deicing Time Violation
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a fatal accident involving a Bombardier Challenger 650 that crashed after a deicing violation at Bangor International Airport on Jan. 25, 2026.
Preliminary findings indicate the aircraft departed after exceeding the maximum holdover time for anti-ice treatment by approximately 16 minutes and 14 seconds. All six occupants were killed during the takeoff roll, according to a report released in March 2026.
Holdover Time Issues
FAA guidelines established a nine-minute holdover window based on snowfall intensity and temperature conditions at the Maine airport that evening. Cockpit voice recorder transcripts suggest pilots believed standard holdover times could range between 14 to 18 minutes. The investigation will determine whether this discrepancy contributed to the loss of control.
Flight data showed no mechanical failure prior to the crash but confirmed excessive wing contamination risks due to the delay. Officials continue to review operator training procedures regarding winter operations standards. A final report is expected after further analysis of flight recorders.
