Pilot Killed After Piper PA-28 Crashes Near Chandler Municipal Airport

A single-engine aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Chandler Municipal Airport on the evening of July 28, killing the sole pilot on board. The aircraft — a Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee, registration N9062J — went down at approximately 7:50 p.m. local time in a commercial-industrial yard near McQueen and Queen Creek roads, roughly one mile southwest of the airport's Runway 22R.

Chandler Fire Department crews arrived within 10 minutes to find the aircraft fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and confirmed the pilot died at the scene. The Chandler Police Department said the pilot was the sole occupant; no ground injuries were reported.

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with support from the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators arrived on scene Wednesday morning to document the wreckage and examine maintenance records. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days; a final probable-cause determination in a fatal accident typically takes a year or more. Aviation safety analysts note that accidents occurring immediately after liftoff are especially unforgiving given the low altitude and limited options for emergency landings. Investigators are expected to examine engine performance, fuel quality and pilot qualifications as part of the standard inquiry.
