Piper PA-32 Makes Emergency Landing Near Block Island; Two Injured

Emergency Landing Near Block Island

A Piper PA-32-260 Cherokee Six made an emergency landing in a mowed field near Block Island State Airport on March 25, 2026. Federal Aviation Administration officials confirmed the incident occurred just after 5 p.m. while the aircraft was en route from Chatham, Massachusetts. Two brothers from Cape Cod were aboard and sustained injuries during the emergency landing.

Investigation Underway

Both occupants exited the aircraft unassisted before first responders arrived. They were conscious and alert but transported to Rhode Island Hospital as a precaution. New Shoreham Police confirmed mechanical problems as the cause, though detailed findings remain pending FAA review. No fatalities have been reported.

Response and Context

Block Island firefighters noted that the mowed condition of the field allowed for rapid access to the aircraft. This incident follows a similar runway excursion involving a Piper aircraft at the airport in late 2025, highlighting operational challenges on the island's short runway. The National Transportation Safety Board has not yet released a preliminary report.
