Toronto Delta Flight 4819 Crash Analysis Focuses on Landing Gear Failure
Fresh analysis of Canada's preliminary findings into the Toronto Delta Flight 4819 crash is propelling the February runway accident back into the spotlight, as investigators and experts examine landing-gear failures, hard-landing dynamics and training questions.
On Feb. 17, 2025, a Delta Connection/Endeavor Air CRJ-900 (N932XJ) operating as Flight 4819 from Minneapolis to Toronto crash-landed on Runway 23 at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The aircraft suffered a right main landing gear failure, veered, flipped inverted, lost its right wing and caught fire. All 80 occupants — 76 passengers and four crew — survived, though 21 were injured, and the aircraft was a total loss.
According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada's preliminary report A25O0021, the side-stay attached to the right main landing gear fractured upon touchdown, causing the gear to fold into the retracted position. This led to the wing root fracturing and the right wing detaching, which released jet fuel that ignited. Flight parameters indicate that approximately 2.6 seconds before touchdown, a rapid descent triggered an Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System "SINK RATE" alert. The aircraft's airspeed was approximately 136 knots at touchdown — below the recommended VRef of 144 knots — with a descent rate of approximately 1,100 feet per minute, exceeding the 720 fpm design limit for the landing gear's impact-absorption capability.
The TSB investigation now focuses on wing structure certification, hard-landing scenarios, landing gear stress limits and pilot training for approaches in gusty, marginal conditions. Delta Air Lines confirmed the accident involved a CRJ-900 operated by Endeavor Air and reportedly offered payments of approximately $30,000 to each of the 80 occupants. Experts credit the survival of all aboard to the CRJ-900's cabin structural strength, effective crew performance during evacuation and quick airport fire rescue response.
