Analysis

On Friday, August 12, 1994, at 1830 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 172L, N19644, was substantially damaged during an aborted takeoff at the Springfield-Bekley Municipal Airport located in Springfield, Ohio. The pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and place of the accident. The flight was destined for London, Ohio, and was conducted under 14 CFR Part 91.

The pilot reported, "Upon takeoff...the plane would not climb out of ground effect with full power and yoke pulled back approx. all the way. I reduced power and hit the runway nose wheel first, causing the plane to porpoise and skid off the runway."

A Federal Aviation Administration Safety Inspector wrote in his Post Accident Aircraft Inspection Report, "...examination of the aircraft revealed that the elevator control column pivot point was damaged in the accident. The yoke was bound in the full back position and the elevator was full down." Further inspection of the elevator control system confirmed cable continuity and all pulley's moved freely. The elevator travel was within specifications. No elevator control system anomalies were found.
