On August 22, 1995, at 2020 Alaska daylight time, a wheel equipped Cessna 182 airplane, N4728D, registered to and operated by the pilot, struck a clump of driftwood debris during landing on the beach at Kalgin Island, Alaska. Kalgin Island is located 18 nautical miles southeast of Kenai, Alaska. The personal flight, operating under 14 CFR Part 91, departed Kenai and the destination was the beach 2 miles south of the northeast point of Kalgin Island. No flight plan was filed and visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The private certificated pilot and his two passengers were not injured and the airplane was substantially damaged.

During a telephone conversation with the pilot on August 24, 1995, he stated that he was landing on the beach to the north and he applied rudder input just prior to touchdown in an attempt to miss a clump of debris. The airplane touched down on the beach going downslope and the airplane's nose gear struck the clump of debris which was composed of alder roots and driftwood. The pilot stated he moved that clump earlier in the day while clearing the landing/takeoff area.
