Analysis

On April 30, 1993, at 0822 central daylight time, a Cessna U206F airplane, N50963, experienced a loss of engine power while on short final approach for Runway 31 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The airplane was destroyed when it crashed in a parking lot. The pilot and one passenger reported minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the business flight, no flight plan was filed. The flight originated from Brainerd, Minnesota, at 0620.

The pilot stated they departed a private airstrip in Brainerd with an intended destination of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Weather information obtained enroute indicated that instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at Grand Rapids. The pilot stated he elected to land at Oshkosh "...to wait for the fog to lift." He reported when the airplane was abeam the numbers for Runway 31 there was a "...momentary loss of manifold pressure and loss of fuel flow. Upon pushing the AUX fuel pump to high position, power and fuel flow were regained." When the airplane was on base leg, there was a total loss of engine power. The pilot stated: "I went straight for the runway but we came up short in the Oshkosh Trucking Company's parking lot." The airplane struck 5 parked vehicles during the crash sequence. Postaccident examination revealed no evidence of preimpact mechanical malfunction (see attached FAA Inspector statements).
