Analysis

On June 18, 1993, at about 1730 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 182F, N1234M, collided with a tower guy wire during landing rollout at Swansons Number 3 Farm strip which is about 33 miles north west of Fallon, Nevada. The aircraft was owned and operated by Carey Transportation of Fallon, Nevada, and was on a business flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft incurred substantial damage. Neither the certificated private pilot nor his one passenger were injured. The flight originated at Eureka, Nevada, on the day of the mishap at about 1650 hours as a flight to the farm airstrip to conduct a hay survey for a potential truck hauling job.

In both his written and oral statements, the pilot said he landed on the airstrip and was rolling out when a wing contacted a guy wire from a nearby power pole. The wire contact caused the aircraft to veer off the runway, collide with a ditch and nose over onto its back.

According to the FAA airport master record file for the landing strip, it is a private use facility with one gravel surfaced runway. A set of 50 foot tall power lines and poles run parallel to the runway at a distance of 50 feet from the runway surface edge.
