Analysis

On July 11, 1993, at 1530 Alaska daylight time, a wheel equipped Helio Courier airplane, N67697, registered to and operated by the Private pilot in command, crashed during the landing rollout at the Buck Stewart landing strip, approximately 45 miles northeast of Talkeetna, Alaska. The personal business flight, conducted under 14 CFR Part 91, last departed Talkeetna, Alaska and the destination was the Buck Stewart landing strip. A company VFR flight plan was in effect and visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The pilot in command and his one passenger were not injured and the airplane sustained substantial damage.

The pilot in command told the NTSB investigator in charge during a telephone conversation on July 20, 1993, that he was transporting equipment to the landing strip in support of his white water rafting business. Just after performing a normal wheel landing on the gravel strip, during the initial rollout, the right main landing gear failed.

Confirmation of the airplane incurring substantial damage was obtained on July 19, 1993.
