Analysis

On April 2, 2000, at 1535 hours Pacific daylight time, an Owens/Richburg VANS RV6-A, N4419Q, dragged the left wing tip while on a short base to final turn for runway 20 at the Sacramento Executive Airport, Sacramento, California. The homebuilt airplane, operated under 14 CFR Part 91, sustained substantial damage. The private pilot/owner/builder and one passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions existed for the personal flight that departed the Rio Vista, California, airport about 1525, and was scheduled to terminate at the accident airport. No flight plan was filed.

In an interview with a Safety Board investigator, the pilot stated that he had been cleared for a short approach in front of another airplane that was on a straight-in approach. He stated that as he turned from base to final over the runway, the left wing tip struck the pavement. After impacting the runway, the nose landing gear was sheared off, and the main landing gear collapsed aft, but remained attached. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical anomalies encountered.
