Probable Cause and Findings

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control of the airplane during the landing roll, which resulted in an inadvertent ground loop and the collapse of the landing gear.

Analysis

On November 26, 2003, at 1530 eastern standard time, a Globe Swift GC1B, N3210K, registered to and operated by the Airline Transport Pilot, ground looped during landing on runway 5, at the Moore County Airport in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The flight was operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91, and visual flight rules. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local pleasure flight. The pilot and passenger were not injured and the airplane sustained substantial damage. The flight originated from Moore County Airport on November 26, 2003 at 1445.

According to the pilot after he made a normal touchdown he then "lost directional control". The airplane ground looped separating the right gear strut at the wing attachment, and collapsed the left main landing gear. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical or engine problems at the time of the accident.
