Analysis

On May 15, 2004, at 1430 central daylight time, a Cessna 172C, N1806Y, operated by Fort Leavenworth Flying Activity as a flying club rental airplane, received substantial damage during a hard landing on runway 05 (5,900 feet by 100 feet, asphalt) at Sherman Army Airfield, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was not operating on a flight plan. The private rated rental pilot was uninjured. The local flight originated from FLV at 1412.

The purpose of the flight was for the pilot to perform three takeoff and landings in order to meet Federal Aviation Regulations currency requirements. The pilot was then going to pick up passengers for a later flight.

The pilot stated in his written report, "Upon final approach just before beginning flair [sic] I felt sudden loss of lift. Plane dropped suddenly. I bounced hard twice before I could apply power and climb. Circled airfield one additional time and landed normally."

No mechanical anomalies pertaining to the airplane were reported.
