Analysis

On April 30, 2004, about 1630 Pacific daylight time, a Mooney M20J, N5764K, sustained substantial damage during an attempted go-around at Roberts Field, Redmond, Oregon. The airplane is owned by the pilot and was being operated as a visual flight rules (VFR) cross-country flight under the provisions of Title 14, CFR Part 91, when the accident occurred. The Private pilot, the sole occupant of the airplane, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a VFR flight plan was filed for the flight that originated from Spokane, Washington.

In a written statement dated May 27, 2004, the pilot reported that while landing (during the flare) he encountered a "large" gust of wind that pushed the airplane to the right of the intended touchdown point. The pilot applied full power and initiated a go-around, but again encountered gusting wind conditions. The pilot stated the wind drove the airplane's left wing into the runway surface. The pilot stated the aircraft's right main gear and nose gear collapsed during the accident sequence.
