Analysis

On September 17, 2006, about 1106 Pacific daylight time, a Mooney M20J, N1157N, experienced a hard landing at French Valley Airport (F70), Temecula, California. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 91. The student pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured; the airplane sustained substantial damage. The cross-country instructional flight departed Pauma Valley Air Park, Pauma Valley, California, about 1100. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The approximate global positioning system (GPS) coordinates of the primary wreckage were 33 degrees 34.27 minutes north latitude and 117 degrees 07.42 minutes west longitude.

The pilot submitted a Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident Report (NTSB Form 6120.1/2) on September 29, 2006. The pilot reported that during a normal approach to land at F70 he failed to flare the airplane and subsequently made a hard landing. The pilot stated that the airplane and engine had no mechanical failures or malfunctions during the flight.
