Analysis

On October 22, 2006, at 1500 Pacific daylight time, an amateur-built experimental-category Alexander Lancair 320 airplane, N1382Y, sustained substantial damage during a go-around at Scappoose Industrial Airpark, Scappoose, Oregon. The airplane was owned by the pilot, and was operated as a visual flight rules (VFR) personal flight under the provisions of Title 14, CFR Part 91, when the accident occurred. The private pilot and passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight that originated from Scappoose approximately 10 minutes prior to the accident.

During a telephone conversation with the National Transportation Safety Board investigator-in-charge on November 2, the pilot stated the aircraft lost electrical power during the flight and he chose to return to the departure airport. The pilot reported he was following traffic to the airport, and due to a delay of an aircraft exiting the active runway, he initiated a go-around maneuver. He reported that as he added power for the go around, the "aircraft entered a left roll and wing came in contact with the ground."

In a post accident written report, the pilot stated, "insufficient right rudder application to counter the torque created when applying full power caused the wing to make contact with the ground..."
