Summary
On November 16, 2008, a Piper PA-18 (N7096D) was involved in an incident near Foraker, OK. All 1 person aboard were uninjured. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
The National Transportation Safety Board determined the probable cause of this incident to be: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the precautionary landing. Contributing to the accident were the wind gusts.
While en route the pilot noticed that the engine began "running a little rough." Unable to resolve the rough-running engine, the pilot elected to execute a precautionary landing to a field. During the landing, the pilot attempted to correct for the crosswind gusts, which he estimated were at 10-15 miles per hour. Subsequently, the airplane's landing gear touched down and the airplane nosed over. Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that the wing struts were bent and the fuselage was buckled.
This incident is documented in NTSB report CEN09CA062. AviatorDB cross-references NTSB investigation data with FAA registry records to provide comprehensive safety information for aircraft N7096D.
