Analysis

On October 5, 2012, an Easter Jet Boeing 737-700 powered by two CFM 56-7B20 turbofan engines experienced a No. 2 engine failure while climbing through 22,500 feet after takeoff from Gimpo International Airport, Seoul, South Korean. The flight crew shutdown the engine, performed an air turnback, and made an uneventful single engine landing. Post flight examination of the No. 2 engine found damage to the high and low pressure turbines. This incident is being investigated by the Republic of Korea Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB) and the NTSB is participating as the United States Accredited Representative to the ARAIB as the State of Manufacturer of the engine and airplane.
