The C-3 Collegian carved out a dominant niche in the American flight training market during the 1930s, with 439 aircraft built between March 1931 and late 1937. Private flying schools and individual instructors embraced the aircraft's predictable "powered glider" characteristics, which made it exceptionally forgiving for novice pilots. The aircraft's gentle stall and landing behavior, combined with its short takeoff requirements, made it ideal for operations from small grass strips across the country.
A notable demonstration of the C-3's capabilities came during the 1931 National Air Tour, where a Collegian won its class while covering 4,850 miles at an average speed of 64 mph. This victory helped establish the aircraft's reputation for reliability and endurance despite its modest power output.
The Manufacturer
The Aeronautical Corporation of America, known as Aeronca, experienced rapid growth during the C-3's production years. The company doubled its output in 1931 to meet initial demand, then doubled production again in 1935 when it built 128 C-3 Master variants alone. By 1935, Aeronca had produced its 500th aircraft overall, marking the company as a significant force in general aviation manufacturing.
Aeronca's pricing strategy made aviation accessible to a broader audience. The 1935 C-3 Master sold for $1,890, nearly matching the pre-Depression C-2's price of $1,880, while earlier variants were offered at $1,730 for the open-cockpit Duplex and $1,790 for the enclosed Collegian. The company eventually became part of Magellan Aerospace, which continues operations at Hook Field near Cincinnati, producing components for aircraft, missiles, and space applications.
Engine & Technical Details
The C-3 was powered by Aeronca's own 36-horsepower E-113 inline piston engine, later upgraded to the modified E-113C variant. This single-ignition powerplant, though simple by modern standards, proved reliable for training operations and enabled the aircraft's economical operation. The engine's modest output was sufficient to provide crisp performance despite the aircraft's relatively heavy construction for its class.
British-built variants used a different powerplant approach, with Light Aircraft Ltd. installing the J.A. Prestwich (JAP) J-99, which was a license-built version of the E-113C. This adaptation demonstrated the engine's fundamental soundness and international appeal.
Design Evolution
Aeronca developed the C-3 as a direct evolution of the earlier C-2, focusing on practical improvements for training operations. The company offered multiple configurations to meet varying customer needs: the Duplex featured an open cockpit, while the Collegian provided an enclosed cabin with dual controls specifically for flight instruction.
The 1935 Master variant represented the pinnacle of C-3 development, featuring an enclosed cockpit, oleo landing gear, a rounded fuselage for improved aerodynamics, wheel brakes, and wing lights. The aircraft's distinctively low-slung cockpit position contributed to the popular flying idiom about piloting "by the seat of your pants," as pilots had excellent visibility of the ground during approach and landing.
Production End and Regulatory Impact
Production ceased abruptly in 1937 when new federal aviation regulations banned several features that made the C-3 economically viable. The new rules prohibited external wire bracing, thin control cables, fabric firewalls, single-ignition engines, and aircraft without airspeed indicators. While existing C-3s were grandfathered under the old regulations, Aeronca could no longer manufacture new aircraft with these cost-saving design elements.
This regulatory shift marked the end of an era for ultra-light, affordable aircraft construction in the United States, forcing manufacturers toward heavier, more complex designs that inevitably carried higher price tags.
Legacy and Preservation
The C-3's cultural impact extended beyond its training role, earning colorful nicknames including "Flying Bathtub" and "Razorback" for its distinctive fuselage shape. Several examples survive in museums today, including a 1933 Razorback at the San Diego Air & Space Museum with 1,200 airframe hours, donated in 1983 by Jim and Gwen Dewey.
Other preserved examples can be found at the Wings of History Air Museum, Western North Carolina Air Museum (1930 model), Golden Wings Flying Museum (with dual controls), and Golden Age Air Museum (1936 variant). At least one aircraft, registered as G-ADYS, remains airworthy as of 2025, continuing to demonstrate the type's gentle flying characteristics to modern pilots.
