The Embraer EMB-505 Phenom 300 revolutionized the light business jet market as the world's best-selling aircraft in its class for over a decade. First flown on April 29, 2008, it is a low-wing twin-turbofan business jet that seats 7-11 passengers with single-pilot operation capability. With a maximum cruise speed of 428 knots and range of 1,971 nautical miles, the 45-foot-wingspan aircraft established new performance standards in its category. Manufactured by Embraer S.A. of Brazil, over 700 units have been delivered worldwide by 2023.

Market Dominance

The Phenom 300 has commanded the light business jet market since 2012, capturing more than 50 percent market share and becoming the most-delivered aircraft in its category annually. By March 2019, the fleet had transported 2.5 million passengers across 600,000 flights, accumulating 800,000 flight hours globally. The aircraft earned recognition from Robb Report as Best Business Jet for four consecutive years from 2011 to 2014, cementing its reputation among discerning buyers.

The Manufacturer

Embraer S.A., founded in 1969 with Brazilian government support, began aircraft production with the EMB-110 Bandeirante turboprop. The company underwent privatization in 1994 and has since established manufacturing facilities across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Following the success of the smaller Phenom 100, Embraer responded to customer demands for a larger business jet with enhanced range and cabin comfort, launching the Phenom 300 development program in May 2005.

Development and Design

Embraer developed the Phenom 300 from scratch, incorporating input from BMW DesignworksUSA and customer feedback from the Phenom 100 program. The prototype, bearing construction number 00001 and registration PT-XVJ (later PR-XVI), took to the skies on April 29, 2008, from Gavião Peixoto, Brazil. Test pilots John Sevalho Corção and chief pilot Eduardo Alves Meni conducted the maiden flight, marking the beginning of an extensive certification program.

The aircraft features an 18 percent composite structure designed for a 28,000-flight-cycle lifespan, significantly extending operational durability. Advanced systems include fly-by-wire brakes with anti-skid technology and sophisticated avionics packages—the original Garmin G3000 system in the base model, upgraded to Prodigy Touch in the 300E variant introduced in October 2017.

Engine and Performance

Two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW535E turbofan engines power the Phenom 300, each generating 3,360 Newtons of thrust. These engines, part of the proven PW500 series with over 30,000 units produced across all variants, feature Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) systems enabling single-pilot operations. The powerplants deliver exceptional reliability with 5,000-hour hot section overhaul intervals while maintaining efficient fuel consumption of 174 gallons per hour at cruise settings.

The aircraft achieves a maximum cruise speed of 428 knots indicated airspeed, equivalent to Mach 0.80, making it the fastest aircraft in its class at launch. With a service ceiling of 45,000 feet and initial climb rate of 4,050 feet per minute, the Phenom 300 offers impressive performance even with one engine inoperative, maintaining 918 feet per minute climb capability. Takeoff distance requirements of 3,138 feet and landing distance of 2,621 feet enable access to shorter airfields, while the stall speed of 89 knots provides favorable handling characteristics.

Production Evolution

Embraer commenced Phenom 300 production in 2009 at its São José dos Campos facility in Brazil. The first customer delivery occurred on December 29, 2009, when Executive Flight Services of the United States received their aircraft at the Brazilian factory. Production later transferred to Melbourne, Florida, after July 2016, where the assembly line maintains capacity for 96 aircraft annually.

Notable early deliveries include serial number 50500108 to Liebherr Aerospace, registered as D-CLAM and delivered on August 19, 2012. The aircraft achieved dual certification from Brazil's ANAC and the Federal Aviation Administration on December 3, 2009, enabling immediate entry into service in major markets.

Operational Legacy

The Phenom 300 serves operators in over 30 countries, ranging from private owners to charter companies and corporations. While primarily civilian in application, limited government use includes the Royal Oman Police and Australia's Navair Jet Services for non-combat missions. The aircraft's flexible cabin configuration accommodates various mission profiles, with seating arrangements from seven to eleven passengers depending on layout requirements.

Production peaked at 60 deliveries in 2013, contributing to the program's milestone of 700 total deliveries by February 2023. The enhanced Phenom 300E variant, announced in October 2017, continues the production line with updated avionics and performance improvements, ensuring the design's relevance in the evolving business aviation market. Most delivered aircraft remain in active service, testament to the type's enduring operational value and market acceptance.
