Service History
The G650 transformed the business aviation landscape following its entry into service on December 27, 2012, when Preston Henn took delivery of the first production aircraft. Within two years, the type accumulated over 33,500 flight hours across the growing fleet. By September 2022, Gulfstream had delivered more than 500 G650 family aircraft, establishing it as the standard-bearer for ultra-long-range business jets.
Demand proved so intense that waiting lists stretched three years, with aircraft priced between $64.5 and $70 million. The G650 dominated the large-cabin market segment, operated primarily by private owners, corporations, and charter services seeking uncompromised performance for intercontinental flights.
The Manufacturer
Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation traces its heritage to the late 1950s when Grumman Aircraft Engineering developed the original Gulfstream I twin-turboprop at Bethpage, New York. After producing approximately 200 G-I aircraft over 11 years, Grumman introduced the jet-powered GII in 1966 at a new Savannah facility dedicated on September 29, 1967.
Entrepreneur Allen Paulson acquired the company from Grumman through a leveraged buyout in the 1970s, forming Gulfstream American. Following subsequent mergers with Chrysler and acquisition by General Dynamics in 1999, Gulfstream Aerospace became a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. Since 1958, the company has produced over 2,200 aircraft, establishing itself as the premier manufacturer of ultra-long-range business jets.
Engine & Technical Details
Two Rolls-Royce BR725 turbofan engines, mounted on the rear fuselage, power the G650. This configuration minimizes cabin noise while providing the thrust necessary for exceptional performance. The engines enable the aircraft to achieve its remarkable 7,000-plus nautical mile range at high-speed cruise settings.
Gulfstream's engineering team spent years perfecting the design, conducting over 1,400 hours of wind tunnel testing by 2008 to optimize the advanced wing configuration. The pressurized fuselage underwent ultimate testing to 18.37 psi, ensuring structural integrity at maximum operating altitudes. The clean-sheet GVI design incorporated high-speed, low-drag aerodynamics enabling sustained Mach 0.90 cruise performance over transcontinental distances.
Performance Capabilities
The G650 established new benchmarks for business aviation with its maximum speed of Mach 0.925 and cruise speed capability of Mach 0.90. Range performance varies with speed: 7,000 nautical miles at typical cruise settings, reducing to 6,400 nautical miles at maximum Mach 0.90 cruise speed.
The enhanced G650ER variant, introduced on May 19, 2014, extended range to 7,500 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 through a 4,000-pound maximum takeoff weight increase accommodating additional fuel. This modification became available as a $2 million retrofit for existing G650 owners. The G650ER demonstrated its capabilities through record-setting flights, including an 8,379 nautical mile journey from Singapore to Tucson in April 2019.
Design Innovation
Gulfstream launched the G650 program in May 2005 with ambitious objectives: creating the largest, fastest business jet with unprecedented range and cabin comfort. The public rollout occurred on September 29, 2009, followed by first flight on November 25, 2009.
The cabin design accommodated up to five distinct living areas with 20 windows, providing exceptional natural lighting and spatial flexibility for 14-19 passengers. This represented a significant advancement over previous business jet interiors, establishing new standards for executive transport comfort during ultra-long-range flights.
Certification and Recognition
The Federal Aviation Administration granted type certification on September 7, 2012, followed by European Aviation Safety Agency approval on December 21, 2012. Ultimately, the G650 received certification in 12 countries worldwide. The aircraft's significance was recognized with the 2014 Robert J. Collier Trophy, aviation's most prestigious award.
Production Legacy
Production milestones marked the G650's success: the 100th aircraft rolled off Savannah assembly lines by November 2014, followed by the 300th in April 2018 and 400th in December 2019. Gulfstream concluded G650 production in February 2025 after manufacturing over 500 examples, transitioning to the next-generation G800.
The G650's influence extended throughout the industry, spurring competitors like Bombardier to develop the Global 7500 and other ultra-long-range designs. Most delivered aircraft remain in active service as of 2025, testament to their enduring value and performance capabilities in the demanding business aviation market.
