The A-10 Thunderbolt II, the world's most effective close air support aircraft, was purpose-built around its devastating 30mm rotary cannon to provide battlefield protection for ground forces. First flown in 1972, it was a straight-wing twin-turbofan single-seat attack aircraft capable of carrying up to 16,000 pounds of mixed ordnance. Measuring 53 feet 4 inches in length with a 57-foot 6-inch wingspan, it was manufactured by Fairchild Republic Aviation.
