The SAAB JAS 39 Gripen is Sweden's fourth-generation multirole fighter aircraft that demonstrated indigenous European capability to develop advanced supersonic combat aircraft in the post-Cold War era. First flown on December 9, 1988, it is a single-engine canard-delta wing configuration powered by a Volvo RM12 afterburning turbofan that can reach Mach 2+ speeds. Measuring 14.1 meters in length with an 8.4-meter wingspan, the Gripen was designed for operations from short runways and road bases. The aircraft was manufactured by SAAB AB in Linköping, Sweden.
