The Mil Mi-24, designated "Hind" by NATO, was the world's first successful helicopter gunship to combine heavy firepower with troop transport capability. First flown in September 1969, it was a twin-engine attack helicopter powered by two Isotov TV3-117 turboshaft engines, capable of carrying eight combat troops plus three crew members. With a maximum speed of 208 mph and armed with anti-tank missiles, rockets, and machine guns, the Mi-24 became the Soviet Union's primary assault helicopter. Manufactured by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, over 3,650 units were produced between 1970 and 1989.
