The Ilyushin Il-96 represents Russia's most ambitious attempt to compete with Western widebody airliners in the post-Soviet era. First flown on September 28, 1988, it is a four-engine long-range airliner featuring high-bypass turbofan engines, advanced winglets, and seating for 262 passengers in two-class configuration. With a maximum range of 7,456 miles and service ceiling of 42,979 feet, the aircraft was manufactured by the Ilyushin Design Bureau with production handled by the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association.
