The Piper PA-38 Tomahawk was a two-seat training aircraft developed to compete in the affordable flight instruction market of the late 1970s. First flown in 1977, it was a low-wing single-engine monoplane that could seat two occupants with a 112-horsepower Lycoming engine. Measuring just over 23 feet in length with a 34-foot wingspan, the aircraft was manufactured by Piper Aircraft Corporation from 1977 to 1982.
