The McDonnell Douglas DC-8-50 was a pioneering long-range commercial jetliner that helped establish turbofan engine technology in civil aviation. First flown in 1960, it was a low-wing four-engine aircraft capable of carrying up to 159 passengers over transcontinental distances. With a length of 150 feet 6 inches and powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D-3B turbofans, it achieved a maximum takeoff weight of 325,000 pounds. Built by the Douglas Aircraft Company and later McDonnell Douglas Corporation, 142 examples were manufactured between 1961 and 1972.
