The ATR 72-201, a pioneering regional turboprop that helped establish the modern short-haul airline market, first flew on October 27, 1988. This twin-engine high-wing monoplane could accommodate 68-78 passengers and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW124B engines producing 2,400 shaft horsepower each. Spanning approximately 27 meters with advanced composite construction, it became the foundation for what would become the world's best-selling regional turboprop family. The aircraft was manufactured by ATR, a joint venture between French Aérospatiale and Italian Aeritalia.
