The Aerostar 600, a high-performance twin-engine general aviation aircraft that held the speed record for fastest twin piston aircraft of its era, first flew in October 1967. Designed by Ted Smith as a low-wing monoplane powered by two 290-horsepower Lycoming IO-540 engines, it could accommodate up to six passengers while achieving cruise speeds of 220 knots. With a wingspan of 34.2 feet and maximum takeoff weight of 5,500 pounds, it was manufactured by Ted Smith Aircraft Company and later acquired by Piper Aircraft Corporation.
