The Ilyushin Il-62, the Soviet Union's first successful long-range intercontinental airliner, demonstrated Soviet aerospace capability during the Cold War era. First flown on January 3, 1963, it was a low-wing four-engine jet that could seat up to 200 passengers on routes extending 7,700 kilometers. Over 185 feet long with rear-mounted Kuznetsov NK-8 turbojet engines, it was manufactured by the Ilyushin Design Bureau at Kazan Aircraft Factory.
