The DHC-2 Beaver stands as the world's first aircraft purpose-built for short takeoff and landing bush operations, revolutionizing wilderness aviation across six continents. First flown on August 16, 1947, it was a high-wing single-engine monoplane powered by a 450-horsepower Pratt & Whitney radial engine, capable of carrying six passengers or 2,100 pounds of cargo. With a wingspan of 48 feet and length of 30 feet 3 inches, the rugged all-metal aircraft could operate from water, snow, or rough terrain with equal proficiency. De Havilland Canada manufactured 1,692 Beavers between 1947 and 1967 at their Downsview, Ontario facility.
