The Mi-8, the world's most produced helicopter in history, revolutionized rotorcraft design as one of the first successful twin-turbine helicopters. First flown in 1961, it was a twin-engine turboshaft helicopter that could transport 28 passengers or carry substantial cargo loads. With over 17,000 units built across all variants, it spans 64 feet in length with a five-blade rotor system. The aircraft was manufactured by the Soviet Union's Mil Design Bureau under chief designer Mikhail Leontyevich Mil.
