The Supermarine Spitfire, Britain's legendary World War II interceptor fighter, became the only British fighter aircraft to remain in continuous production throughout the entire war. First flown in 1938, it was a single-seat, low-wing monoplane powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin inline engine, featuring distinctive elliptical wings. With a wingspan of approximately 36 feet and powered by engines ranging from 1,030 to over 2,000 horsepower in later variants, more than 20,300 Spitfires were manufactured by Supermarine and associated factories.
