The Boeing 737-400, a stretched variant of the popular 737 Classic series, bridged the capacity gap between smaller regional jets and larger narrow-body aircraft in the late 1980s. First flown in February 1988, it was a low-wing twin-engine airliner that could accommodate 188 passengers in high-density configuration. Measuring 10 feet longer than its 737-300 predecessor, the aircraft featured strengthened wing spars and a protective tail bumper to prevent ground strikes. Boeing manufactured 489 examples at their Renton, Washington facility between 1988 and 2000.
