The Antonov An-72, a revolutionary Soviet tactical transport aircraft, pioneered the practical application of the Coanda effect for enhanced short takeoff and landing performance. First flown on August 31, 1977, it was a high-wing twin-turbofan design capable of carrying cargo loads while operating from airstrips as short as 600 meters. With its distinctive over-wing mounted engines and 31.89-meter wingspan, the aircraft achieved exceptional STOL capabilities that made it invaluable for operations in remote locations. Manufactured by the Kharkiv Aircraft Manufacturing Company under Antonov design, approximately 114 aircraft were produced between 1984 and 1992.
