The Airbus A340 was Europe's answer to the long-range quadjet market, designed to compete with Boeing's 747 on ultra-long-haul routes where twin-engine aircraft were restricted. First flown on October 21, 1991, it was a low-wing four-engine widebody that could carry 239 to 380 passengers depending on variant, with ranges extending up to 16,670 kilometers. Measuring between 59.4 and 75.3 meters in length with a 60.3 to 63.5-meter wingspan, it was manufactured by Airbus Industrie.
