Analysis

On February 27, 1994, at 1350 hours mountain standard time, a Cessna 150, N10669, lost control, collided with an airport runway marker, and exited the right side of runway 22L at Chandler Municipal Airport, Chandler, Arizona. The pilot was conducting a visual flight rules solo instructional flight. The airplane, registered to and operated by Michael Roberti, dba Arizona Aviation Flying Club, Falcon Field, Mesa, Arizona, sustained substantial damage. The noncertificated student pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The flight originated at Falcon Field at 1325 hours.

The pilot told the Safety Board when he reported the accident on the telephone that during the landing roll a large hawk flew up from the edge of the runway. He turned the airplane to avoid the bird, lost control, and exited the runway environment.

The pilot re-iterated his telephone conversation in the Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident Report, NTSB Form 6120.1/2.
