Analysis

On April 17, 1994, at 1855 central daylight time, a Cessna 150J airplane, N51175, sustained substantial damage when it departed the runway while landing at the Fredericktown Municipal Airport, Fredericktown, Missouri. The solo student pilot received no injuries. The local instructional flight originated about 1845 and was conducted under 14 CFR Part 91. A flight plan was not filed and visual meteorological conditions prevailed.

The student pilot reported she was landing on runway 19 in a "slight crosswind". She said she was holding left rudder and, when the nose wheel touched down, she lost directional control. The airplane veered to the left and departed the runway.

An airport construction project was in progress and a long depression was excavated parallel to the runway about 50 feet from the edge. The airplane descended the embankment and nosed over.

Postaccident examination of the airplane by FAA inspectors disclosed damage to the nose, both wings, the vertical stabilizer, and the rudder. There was no evidence of a preexisting airplane malfunction.
