Analysis

On July 24, 1994, at 1320 Pacific daylight time, a Piper J-3C-65, N70192, operated by its owner, was substantially damaged while landing at the Westover Field Amador County airport, in Jackson, California. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed during the personal flight, and no flight plan was filed. The private pilot was not injured. The flight originated from Jackson, California, on July 24, at 1215.

The pilot reported to the National Transportation Safety Board that he made a full stall landing and held the control stick in his lap. During rollout, approaching the taxiway turnoff, a strong gust of wind from the west was encountered. The airplane skidded to the east, veered off the runway, and was substantially damaged. The ELT activated. The pilot further reported that no mechanical problems were experienced with his airplane.
