Analysis

On February 15, 1996, at 1015 central standard time, a Cessna 210, N9614X, sustained substantial damage during a hard landing and subsequent nose over at Shelby County Airport, Shelbyville, Illinois. The private pilot and one passenger reported no injuries. The 14 CFR Part 91 flight departed Shelby County Airport, Shelbyville, Illinois, en route to Pittsfield, Illinois, but returned to land at Shelbyville due to marginal visual meteorological conditions. No flight plan was filed.

The pilot reported that when he landed he didn't pull the nose up and the airplane landed on the nose tire. The airplane bounced up. The pilot didn't get the nose up again, and the airplane landed on the nose tire a second time and blew the tire. The pilot had difficulty steering the airplane and it veered off the runway. The nose wheel went into some soft dirt and the airplane subsequently nosed over.
