Analysis

On September 19, 1993, about 0930 hours eastern daylight time, N9704G, a Cessna 180H, registered to Robert Henry, Scio, Ohio, was substantially damaged during landing rollout at Clever Field, New Philadelphia, Ohio. The pilot and three passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a flight plan was not filed. The personal flight originated from Cadiz, Ohio, about 0900 hours and was conducted under 14 CFR 91.

The pilot stated that after touching down on runway 32, the airplane veered to the left. He applied right rudder and right brake, but the airplane continued to veer to the left and into grass. He did not report any mechanical malfunctions.

According to an FAA aviation safety inspector, the airplane landed on runway 32, veered off the left side of the runway during the rollout, and groundlooped. The right main landing gear collapsed and the right wing was substantially damaged. The pilot told the inspector that he "failed to keep aircraft under control."
