Analysis

On October 23, 1999, at 1130 central daylight time, a Stinson 108-1 airplane, N8525K, owned and operated by the pilot, was substantially damaged during landing at the Airpark East Airport near Terrell, Texas. The commercial rated pilot and the two passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a flight plan was not filed for the 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The flight originated from the Cedar Mills Airport near Gordonville, Texas, at 1045.

The pilot reported that after the airplane touched down on runway 31, it veered right and departed the runway. He applied power in order to avoid a ditch, and the aircraft turned left, crossed over to the west side of the runway, and struck two posts of a barbed wire fence located approximately ten to fifteen feet from the runway. The airplane continued ten to twenty yards beyond the fence before coming to a stop.

The pilot further reported that the left wing lift struts were bent, and the horizontal stabilizer, left elevator, main landing gear fairings and propeller were damaged.

The pilot estimated that the wind was northerly at 10-15 knots with gusts approximately plus 5 knots.
