Analysis

On April 5, 2003, at 1115 eastern standard time, a Cessna 152, N6599B, registered to Pelican Aviation Incorporated and operated by a private pilot, sustained substantial damage during a hard landing at Summerville Airport, Summerville, South Carolina. The personal flight was operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 and visual flight rules. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, and the pilot was not injured. The flight departed Summerville Airport, Summerville, South Carolina, at 1055.

The pilot stated that during landing on runway 24, the airplane touched down hard, bounced, and collapsed the nose gear during the subsequent touchdown. After the nose gear collapsed, the airplane came to rest on the runway. Examination of the airplane revealed the lower section of the engine firewall was buckled. No mechanical or flight control problems were reported by the pilot prior to the accident.
