Analysis

On December 10, 2006, at 1839 central standard time, a Bombardier Inc BD-100-1A10, N523FX, registered as a fractional ownership through Bombardier Flexjet and operated by Jet solutions, LLC, received substantial damage on impact with bird(s) during initial climb after takeoff from runway 23 (6,000 feet by 150 feet, asphalt) at Waukegan Regional Airport, Waukegan, Illinois. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The 14 CFR Part 135 flight was operating on an instrument rules flight plan. The airplane was piloted by a Bombardier Flexjet flightcrew. The flight was originating at the time of the accident and was en route to Waukesha, Wisconsin.

After takeoff, approximately 450 feet above ground level, the airplane struck a flock of Canadian geese. The airplane then returned to the departure airport, encountered but did not strike additional geese during the approach, and landed without further incident.

The right side of the nose and right wing leading edge were damaged. Repairs to the airplane included replacement of the right fuselage forward skin, frames 242.5 and 253. The forward pressure bulkhead outer frame, 250, was repaired.

Remains of the bird(s) were not retained for identification by Bombardier Flexjet, Jet solutions, LLC, or other maintenance personnel.
